Healthy eating and physical
activity are the best way for teens to lose weight. The body
needs food but the problem occurs when a teenager eats too much
food containing saturated fats and sugar.
Teens generally eat the foods their parents eat
and the foods their peers eat. Not all of the diets that
parents choose for themselves are as healthy as they should be.
If the parent is a vegetarian, they may choose to serve this
diet to their child. As a child is growing, they need a variety
of nutrients to build strong bones and teeth and to keep their
bodies functioning. Vegetarian diets should be discussed with
your child's doctor. You need to make sure the child is
receiving the correct amount of nutrients. Sometimes, it may be
necessary to add chicken or fish to a child's diet.
Drinking herbal teas is another habit some
parents may have. Herbal teas, such as green tea, have some
health benefits. But they are also diuretics and drinking too
much leads to using the bathroom more than necessary. This
could result in dehydration or colon problems for the teen.
Teens are influenced by television and magazine
ads. When they see slim teen actresses, they want to
be able to wear the same clothes in the same
size. This is misleading. Teens need to be educated to
understand there are different body types and not everyone
will be a size 2 for the rest of their life.
Ads on television and in magazines also show
diets and diet plans. Teens pick up on these and feel that they
may work for them. A lot of these diets claim you can lose ten
pounds easily in two weeks. This is usually a low-calorie diet
plans. The body needs food to sustain it and physical activity
to burn fat. When the teen begins to starve the body by denying
it the proper amount of nutrients, the body takes defensive
measures and the teen feels hungry and will eat a lot of food,
probably junk food, to appease this hunger.
Another way teens try to lose weight is by
vomiting after eating. This causes the body to expel
hydrochloric acid which burns the throat and the teeth. This
also leads to other health complications.
There is a healthy way for your teenager to
lose weight, eating the proper foods for their nutritional
needs and eating in correct proportions to their
needs. Your teen will need the support of the entire
family. Discuss the issue with your child. The support may be
that the entire family needs to change their eating habits.
Seek the advice of your doctor or a nutritionist to develop a
healthy eating plan.
Involve the entire family in physical
activities. You can purchase a gym or sports club membership
for the entire family. You should arrange your schedules so
that all of you are there together. Add other activities such
as cycling, walking, swimming, and hiking trips. If you like
participating in sports such as skiing in winter, you can ski
and the kids can snowboard or ski. This type of activity is
good for burning off excess fat and keeping fit.
The best time to start healthy eating for your
teen is when they are a young child. Young children emulate
their parents and when they develop good habits, they usually
last throughout their life.
