The teenage years are
difficult for a lot of teens. Their bodies are going through
hormonal changes. They have not made up their minds as to what
they want to do with their lives. They are semi-adults and want
to do things they see other adults doing. They are influenced
by peer pressure to wear the right clothes, be seen in the
right places, and join the right clubs. It is a period of
confusion.
If your teen was chubby as a child and has not
lost that body fat, they will be chubby starting their teen
years. They need to develop healthy eating patterns and
participate in physical activities that will help them to burn
the body fat. If not, they may be teased by their peers and
called names and be under constant pressure to try to fit
in.
Your teen will need emotional and moral support
if they are overweight. If your child expresses weight as a
problem, you should consult your doctor or a dietician with
your child to work out a program to help them lose the
weight.
Weight management is a long-term process. The
entire family must be involved, not just the teen who is
trying to lose weight. Teens that have the support of
their families have better results in weight reduction
programs than those who do not.
The weight loss program created for your teen
should be a safe one. It is healthy to lose about two pounds
per week. More than that can create some health problems. This
can be accomplished by exercise and a decrease in calorie
intake.
Teens should avoid drinks that are high in
calories. You should encourage them to switch to diet sodas or
low calorie drinks. They should drink a lot of water or other
sugar-free drinks. Change is difficult at any age. Steps to
improve the diet should be undertaken gradually. The change
then becomes a new habit and they will not fall back into their
old patterns.
Remind your teen that they should stop eating
when they are full and should eat slowly, chewing each bite of
food. They do not have to clean their plate if they are no
longer hungry. Discuss problems with them. Overeating occurs a
lot when they have emotional problems. You can advise your teen
to keep a journal or diary. They can write down what makes them
want to eat when they are not hungry. Do not invade their
privacy and read the journal or diary without their permission.
Instead, let them know they can discuss any problems with
you.
To help your teen make healthy eating choices
you should have plenty of fruits and vegetables available.
Instead of eating a candy bar for a snack, have a variety of
fruits available. Eating the proper nutrients will help them
lose weight and it will keep their heart and body healthy.
Instead of going on a diet or trying fad diets
to lose weight, the change from unhealthy to healthy eating
habits will help your teen lose weight and provide them with
the nutrients they need for growth and
development.
